Welcome, Mitchel Goben, Software Engineer!

We are so pleased to welcome Mitchel Goben, Software Engineer, to the team. You can learn more about Mitch below.

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?

I would say I am a nerd haha! I love space, computers, video games, 3D printing, golf and soccer! In my free time, I enjoy trying new food and being a beer snob. Also, I love learning new things–from new recipes to entirely new hobbies! I’m currently living in Ithaca, NY with my girlfriend Jaleigh.

Where did you go to school?

I went to Penn State University for Information Science and Technology with a focus in Software Design and Development.

How did you get into software engineering? What areas of your field do you like to focus on?

I got into software engineering and development after I realized 3 things about chemical engineers, which is what I wanted to be prior. But I realized they are rich, miserable and bald. I only wanted to be bald… so I switched professions! I have a passion for front end web and app development with a heavy focus on UI/ UX, WordPress, JavaScript and PHP.

Do you have a code of ethics or a mantra that you live by when doing development work?

I have two! The first and most important is passion breeds passion, so share often. And the second is do something today that your tomorrow self will thank you for.

How do our core values (collaboration, initiative, ingenuity) align with your own?

As a person who believes passion breeds passion, collaboration on projects or code that my coworkers feel strongly about makes me want to bring the same energy and enthusiasm. Being ingenuitive goes hand in hand with collaboration! Bringing a cool new idea to the table even for it to get shot down can be incredibly valuable to start new trains of thought. As for taking initiative, I am very knowledgeable in my field and might know things that my clients do not so taking initiative to me means making suggestions and asking the right questions to help my clients reach their goals and realize goals they didn’t know they had.

What do you want to learn in the next 12 months as a software engineer? What do you want to learn about the web development industry?

I really want to hone my skills for app development and continue on the path of learning new skills and languages. In short I want to be a jack of all trades, master of few. There is so much to learn about the web dev industry, where to start! I enjoy learning about new trends that make their way through the internet and how I can apply those trends to our projects!

What is your favorite song/artist/album and why?

This is such a hard question to answer. I have such an eclectic music taste it can go from Beethoven to Heavy Metal to Pop to Punk to Electronic. My tastes change with my mood or with what my task is for the day! Feel free to drop some cool new recommendations.

What is the one thing most people don’t know about you?

I have a tattoo sleeve that incorporates all of my favorite aspects about space and technology. It has a piece from my favorite video game, my favorite telescope, the solar system itself, a circuit board, the first line of code I ever learned and an astronaut floating around a beer bottle filled with space and connected by the chemical compound of hops! Also, a little known fact is that I designed all but one of them.
