We are so pleased to welcome Winter Grimm, Support Engineer & Project Manager, to the team. You can learn more about Winter below.
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
I’m from Dublin, OH.
Where did you go to school?
I went to The Ohio State University.
How did you get into Software Engineering? What areas of your field do you like to focus on?
My dad was a software engineer, so I always had an interest in learning. Since I joined Columbus Code & Coffee over a year ago, I’ve created a more structured curriculum for myself and have been focused on learning the fundamentals so that I have a general understanding of how everything works and just need to learn syntax for new languages.
Do you have a code of ethics or a mantra that you live by when doing your work?
My sister taught me her mantra of “kill them with kindness”. I think it speaks to the philosophy of how you never know what somebody is going through, so you should always do your best to be kind to everyone. I do a lot of yoga, and my instructors have taught me the same philosophy. There’s a saying of “we do yoga not only for ourselves but also for others” and yoga has really helped me live the mantra even when I’m feeling stressed out.
How do our core values (collaboration, initiative, ingenuity) align with your own?
These are in line with my own core values, and this is how I go about living my life and doing my work; I just didn’t formally vocalize it in the past. It’s a nice reminder to be mindful about the values now that they’re written down and everyone at Buckeye talks about them.
What do you want to learn in the next 12 months as a Support Engineer & Project Manager?
I’m excited to learn the basics of HTML & CSS so I can create my own websites. I used to love using custom themes on websites like MySpace and Neopets when I was a kid, but I can’t recall the last time I decorated an online space like this since social media doesn’t allow for custom themes anymore.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Another yoga saying I love: take what you like and leave what you don’t. I think it’s a really great way to live life because I think about the different people like my yoga teachers that have taught me lessons that I apply to my life.
What is the one thing most people don’t know about you?
I used to be on the fencing team in high school.
